Barcelona Club idol Xavi Hernández made a successful debut in the dugout at FC Barcelona.
With the return, the 26-time Spanish soccer champions made a first step out of the crisis by beating Espanyol Barcelona 1-0 (0-0). The fans and the new coach cheered Memphis Depay’s winning goal with a penalty kick in the 48th minute. DFB national goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen did not allow a goal this time.
Barcelona signed club legend Xavi in early November before the international break. Even without the new hope on the bench, the Catalans had not gotten 3: 3 at Celta Vigo afterwards. Now Barca fans celebrated their fifth win of the season.
Defending champion Atlético Madrid had previously won 1-0 (0-0) against CA Osasuna with a late goal from central defender Felipe (87th).
Sevilla only draws
Sevilla FC almost screwed up the dress rehearsal for the Champions League duel with VfL Wolfsburg. Thanks to the equalizer of the ex-Schalke Ivan Rakitic (90th + 2 minutes), the team of coach Julen Lopetegui came to a 2: 2 (1: 2) against CD Alaves. With 28 points now, Seville is at least overnight leader in the Primera Division.
Thanks to Victor Laguardia (5th minute) and a penalty from Joselu (45th + 7th), the guests surprisingly took the lead at halftime. The equalizer by Lucas Ocampos (38th) to 1: 1 and the late 2: 2 by Rakitic were worth at least one point in the end.
