Reus versus Rose: Dangerous system discussion at Borussia Dortmund

Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund has to lick wounds after the 1: 2 (0: 1) at runner-up RB Leipzig. Captain Marco Reus, of all people, who asked the system question himself, provided additional explosive material – right?

It was a bitter homecoming for Marco Rose. Not only did the Leipzig, who has been in the service of BVB since the summer, receive the third bankruptcy in the eleventh game of the Bundesliga. His black and yellow protégés were well served in the Red Bull Arena with the final result, especially in the first round at Borussia nothing came together.

To make matters worse, the 45-year-old had to put up with critical words from his leading player Marco Reus, which he made public and clear. “We can’t get along with that,” said the offensive star on “Sky” about the tactical direction of BVB, trained by Marco Rose, in the first half.

It was a small affront to the coach that made people sit up and take notice.

Marco Rose’s plan doesn’t work out

This had again set up a chain of three or five against RB Leipzig. Mats Hummels, Manuel Akanji and Marin Pongracic acted centrally, Thomas Meunier and Thorgan Hazard began on the wings. The idea: If the opponent has possession of the ball, there should be a clear majority on the defensive, so that Leipzig’s attackers Christopher Nkunku, Dominik Szoboszlai and Yussuf Poulsen have no development opportunities.

As Reus stated afterwards, however, the plan went completely wrong. Because: On the offensive, BVB lacked a player who would support the center with its own pressing. The back four, so the veteran clearly, “suits us much better because we are much more active there than in the five-man chain”.

After all, Rose switched to the half-time break and ordered attacker Hazard one position further back in the left defense. The weak Pongracic stayed in the cabin, with Ansgar Knauff the offensive department received support. Apparently the change was fruitful, as Reus of all people achieved the interim compensation after Meunier’s template (52nd).

BVB bankruptcy is not due to the system

But was the brief change actually based solely on the new tactical orientation? Hardly likely. Knowing that the system in the first half is not the only cause of all evil, Reus also complained about the lack of “aggressiveness” against the Saxons. One was never really “at eye level”.

A useless approach in error analysis probably also because the Revierklub previously won with a back three against 1. FC Köln (2: 0), FC Ingolstadt (2: 0) and Arminia Bielefeld (3: 1). Although RB Leipzig is considered a different caliber in view of the individual class, the Dortmund professionals are by no means alien to the tactical specifications of their coaches.

“It’s not a question of the system. We also scored points with a chain of three or five. There is no need for discussion,” Rose answered Reus’ criticism after the game.

Rather, Leipzig’s well-deserved victory was also due to the fact that Marco Rose’s opposite Jesse Marsch mirrored the BVB system after the equalization and switched from a back three to a back four. RB took over the scepter again, less than ten minutes after Emil Forsberg’s substitution, the old gap was restored. And so the system preferred by Reus did not prevent Leipzig from firing more shots on goal (15 to nine) and winning significantly more duels (123 to 98) in the end.

Reus statements with explosives – Zorc intervenes

As a reason for the defeat, Rose, for his part, made the fact that “the movement” in the basic order was not sufficient. His superior Michael Zorc also recalled the misery of injuries that Rose’s team has accompanied since their arrival in the Ruhr area.

The sports director, well aware of the scope Marco Reus’ words can achieve, also tried to limit the damage. The statements of the player were “due to the frustration of the defeat”, Reus had “then immediately sought a conversation” with Marco Rose. “Everything is okay between the two of them.”

Meanwhile, the two protagonists do not have time to solve the problem. Reus is on the road with the German national team, there is a lot of work waiting for Rose in Dortmund. Hopefully the frustration will have fizzled out after the international break. Just like the dangerous discussion about the system at BVB.
