Tennis: Grabher and Kraus in Linz with initial defeats

Grabher lost to French Alize Cornet on Monday after a tough fight 6: 7 (7), 4: 6. Kraus had no chance at her WTA debut against Belgian Alison van Uytvanck and lost 1: 6, 0: 6. This means that Patricia Mayr-Achleitner’s first success remains in 2013, the last home win in Linz.

Grabher from Vorarlberg led against Cornet 4-2 in the first set and had two set balls in the tie-break. After 65 minutes, the run went to the experienced Frenchwoman, who repeatedly quarreled loudly with her error-prone game. In the second set, the 25-year-old Grabher had to give up her serve against the number 59 in the world right at the beginning. After another break, when the score was 2: 5 and Cornet served, she initially fended off two match points. The next service game of the unseeded French woman brought the decision after 2:02 hours of play.

Grabher stated that her service was not good enough and that she acted too incorrectly. “From the baseline I had a good feeling, but in the crucial moments I risked too much and made too many mistakes,” regretted the woman from Dornbirn, who had given up at the start in Linz last year due to an ankle injury.

19-year-old Kraus had to admit defeat to Van Uytvanck after just 53 minutes. The only game she succeeded against the world number 69. to 1: 3. “I was overly nervous. I still started well,” said Kraus. “The longer it took, the better the answers Alison found, and then she really got into the game,” analyzed the Viennese, who was disappointed but still spoke of a “good experience”.
