Fürth Greuther Fürth plays well, fights – and is the better team. But once again Eintracht Frankfurt strikes at the last minute and secures the all-important three. Particularly emotional for someone from Frankfurt.
Eintracht keeper Kevin Trapp had tears in his eyes after the final whistle, it was so intense. The relief of the happy 2: 1 in the emotional basement duel of the Bundesliga at SpVgg Greuther Fürth was clear to see in the Frankfurt goalkeeper.
For the third time in a row, the Hessians scored the redeeming goal in stoppage time – as in the Europa League against Olympiacos Piraeus, it led to victory. “Today I am very proud of the team, their attitude and their mentality,” said coach Oliver Glasner, praising his team.
In a turbulent final phase, Joker Sebastian Rode (76th) and Rafael Santos Borré (90th + 3) released the Frankfurters with the second win of the season after the Fürth had dominated the game for long stretches. The Franconian climber, who had come to an equalizer through Cédric Itten (90 + 1), also remained without a win in his 22nd Bundesliga home game in the club’s history.
“After the equalization, I claim that 99 out of 100 teams won’t come back. But these guys are just amazing ”, enthused Glasner about the performance of his players. After three games without a win in the league, the Frankfurt team gained at least some air in the table basement and improved to 14th place.
For Fürth, however, the long dry spell continues. The Kleeblätter are now the first team in Bundesliga history to have only one point after eleven match days. “I cannot understand why we are caught in this form,” said Fürth coach Stefan Leitl. He has no answers for defeat.
Fürth never had more shots on goal than in the game against Eintracht. But the Bundesliga climber could not reward himself again. Remaining in class is becoming more and more distant. The deficit is now eight points to relegation place 16. “99 percent have probably written us off, but we still believe in it,” said midfielder Julian Green and admitted: “I’ve never been in a situation like this.”
