Kasan Florian Wellbrock won the silver medal in the 800 meter freestyle at the European Short Course in Kazan.
At the end of the title fights in Russia, the 24-year-old swam a German record time of 7: 27.99 minutes and only had to admit defeat to his long-term competitor Gregorio Paltrinieri, with whom he fought a gripping duel. The Italian hit after 7: 27.94 minutes. He set a European record. Bronze went to Sven Schwarz from Hanover in 7: 33.85 minutes.
For Olympic champion Wellbrock it was the second medal at the European Championships in Russia after gold over 1500 meters. Black finished third in Wellbrock’s gold race.
Shortly before the grand finale in Wellbrock and Schwarz, Isabel Gose won her second bronze medal at the European Championships in the 400 meter freestyle. Thanks to Wellbrock, Gose and Schwarz, the German team flies home with one gold, one silver and four bronze medals.
