Groningen At the end of his career as a professional footballer, star striker Arjen Robben received a standing ovation in the stadium of his home club Groningen.
The Dutchman, recently suffering from injuries, came into the stadium in a neat suit, but said he would have preferred to say goodbye as a footballer on the pitch, reported the Dutch news agency ANP. Surprisingly, the 37-year-old returned to FC Groningen last year, where his career began.
He couldn’t really help the Eredivisie club in his farewell year. Injuries plagued the striker and he could only play in seven games. Robben made his debut at FC Groningen in 2000 and then played for PSV Eindhoven. He then came to Bayern in 2009 via Chelsea and Real Madrid. There the Dutchman celebrated his greatest successes. The highlight was winning the Champions League 2013 in London’s Wembley Stadium – his highlight in the final was the winning goal to 2-1 against Borussia Dortmund.
