Boxing: Mexican Alvarez makes a name for himself in the history books

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, currently celebrated as the world’s best boxer, beat Caleb Plant in Las Vegas on Sunday night and became the first world champion of the four major super middleweight associations.

The 31-year-old Mexican already had the WBA, WBO and WBC belts, and after his knockout victory in the eleventh round against the American Plant, he is now also IBF champion. For Alvarez it was the 57th victory in the 60th fight, 39 successes come early.

“To become the undisputed world champion means a lot to the history of Mexico. There are only six undisputed champions in history, and that motivates me to be one of them,” said Alvarez after the fight in front of 16,586 spectators at the MGM Grand Garden Arena . “Caleb is a good fighter. He was a tough opponent with a lot of skill.”

Before his triumphs in the super middleweight division, Alvarez was already world light heavyweight, middleweight and light middleweight champion. Regardless of the weight classes, the professional from Guadalajara is considered the best boxer in the world.
