Wolfsburg To crown a perfect week, Lukas Nmecha scored the winning goal against FC Augsburg. Now there are very special days waiting for the attacker.
Goal against Leverkusen, goal against Salzburg, goal against Augsburg – the week couldn’t have gone better for Lukas Nmecha. Especially since there was a call in between that the VfL Wolfsburg striker hadn’t expected.
National coach Hansi Flick was at the other end of the line and informed the 22-year-old that he was nominated for the national team for the first time. “I didn’t really expect that. That was a bit of a shock, but the joy came when I told my parents, who were also very happy, ”reported Nmecha.
In Wolfsburg, of all places, the offensive player will join the DFB-Elf for the first time, which will then play against Liechtenstein on Thursday in the Volkswagen Arena. Nmecha hopes for a few minutes of action, of course, but doesn’t want to put any pressure on himself. “I just try to go there, train well and hope that I’ll get my chance then.”
Nmecha head to head
In the 1-0 (1-0) of VfL Wolfsburg against FC Augsburg, the newcomer from Manchester City once again advertised itself. After a nice cross from Paulo Otavio, Nmecha headed in and gave the new VfL coach Florian Kohfeldt a perfect week. Third game, third win: thanks to Nmecha, Kohfeldt remains unbeaten as coach of VfL Wolfsburg.
Four days after the 2-1 win against RB Salzburg in the Champions League, Lower Saxony had to tremble for victory in the second half because they ran out of strength. Nonetheless, Kohfeldt was satisfied. “The first half was the best we played this week,” said Mark van Bommel’s successor. “We should have led significantly higher.”
Wolfsburg usury almost punished
The strong Otavio (22nd), Maximilian Arnold (31st) and Sebastiaan Bornauw (31st) missed the best opportunities in the first round for the green-whites, who were overwhelmingly superior for a long time. The weak Augsburgers, who had Tobias Strobl injured early, were only dangerous before the break with a free kick by Daniel Caligiuri (34th).
Otherwise, the guests were initially unable to build on their good performance against Stuttgart, which was supposed to provide self-confidence. But for a long time nothing could be seen of that. The statistics after 45 minutes were 69:31 percent of possession. “That wasn’t enough before the break,” said FCA coach Markus Weinzierl.
After the change of sides, the hosts’ usury of opportunities almost took revenge. The guests pushed for the equalizer, which Andi Zeqiri should have achieved in the 52nd minute. The attacker failed because of the strong Koen Casteels in the Wolfsburg goal. “We would have deserved a point in the end, but you have to use your chances for that,” said Weinzierl. His team missed a week after the 4-1 win against VfB Stuttgart to move out of the relegation zone.
