Hamburg Uwe Seeler is a living legend. The former top player at HSV is satisfied with his life. On November 5th, the popular “Uns Uwe” celebrates his 85th birthday.
Uwe Seeler is the icon of Hamburger SV. In the Bundesliga alone, he scored 137 goals for the founding member of the league, HSV.
The honorary captain of the DFB scored 43 goals in 72 international matches for the national team. Seeler, who lives in Norderstedt, will be 85 years old on November 5th.
question : Mr. Seeler, how are you?
Uwe Seeler : It could be better. But I am satisfied. The doctors gave me a lecture. And you’re right: I’m spoiled, of course, because I used to be healthy and fit again quickly, but at the age of 85, it all takes longer, and it’s harder. But I accepted that. At the moment I’m still a little weak on my feet. I don’t even know that about myself. But I always say: getting old is not for cowards.
When you talk about health, Corona is also an issue. Was the Corona period very difficult for you?
Seeler : Yes of course! We lived completely abstinent and hardly had any visitors. It was a very long time when we practically lived in house prison. Now we’re going to have dinner with friends again, but not that long either. We ourselves can’t really complain: we have a really big house, we can go for a walk in the garden, but otherwise it’s quite an imposition, for example for people with small apartments.
When you look back on your life, would you do it all over again?
Seeler : Basically, I would say: I think I’ve done everything right so far. I am satisfied and so is my family. We can be satisfied with what we have created.
“I’m absolutely normal, and I like that”
Most people know who you are, what you’ve done. You never took off. Many people say: Uwe is one of us. You’re right?
Seeler : The best thing in the world is to be normal. That’s how I’ve always understood it. It’s normal for me to be grounded. I also come from a family that made sure of that. Vaddern has already made sure that I stay normal. And then I did that too. I can’t go crazy at all. I can say: I’m totally normal, and I like that.
Your club is and will remain HSV. He was relegated in 2018. How do you see the development after three missed ascents?
Seeler : In the first few years after relegation, things went wrong. But I still see it critically now. I’m not yet convinced that it will work this season. But I like to be surprised because I want to be promoted. But surprises are a thing of the past, it always takes time. But at some point they will have to make it because I believe that otherwise it will be more and more difficult.
Will you be going to the Hamburg Volksparkstadion again?
Seeler : Naturally. When I’m reasonably fit again, I’ll go straight back to the stadium. That is clear. At the moment, however, I am not in the condition to go there again.
What do you think of FC St. Pauli? Has the Kiezclub, which has been on a promotional spot for weeks, been number one in town?
Seeler : They haven’t risen yet, that’s still a long way to go. But when they rise, I say: why not? If they win the games like they did last, then they deserve it. And HSV has to see that he gets his socks off. And yes, the results show it, right now FC St. Pauli is ahead of HSV.
How do you assess the German national team with Hansi Flick as the successor to Joachim Löw? New trainer, new momentum?
Seeler : The start was good, but we have to wait and see. Hansi Flick is just building a new team and you have to give him time for that. Then it has to be shown what successes he has achieved. He was a good player himself and I think he knows what’s good and what’s bad. I wish him the best of luck in his work.
If you compare the times: Would you rather be a professional footballer today, where you can earn completely different sums of money than before?
Seeler : They all earn more money, but I don’t even know whether these days are really the better. Much has changed: the family used to have a car, today everyone in a family of five has one. On football: I don’t want to criticize the sums that are being paid today. But the professionals shouldn’t overdo it, the price-performance ratio has to be right. But it doesn’t always do when you hear some transfer fees. And that’s why I’m afraid it can’t go well for long.
Kimmich’s attitude to Corona is very strange
A current top professional is Joshua Kimmich. What do you think of his attitude towards the corona vaccination?
Seeler : Kimmich is a great player and a bright head. But I find his attitude towards vaccination very strange. He must also think of the others he can infect. If all players get vaccinated, then everyone should. And he’ll just be able to take two pikes. My opinion is clear: if vaccination is the only thing that helps in the pandemic, then it should be done too.
You have been married to your wife Ilka for more than 60 years. Has there ever been a crisis over the years?
Seeler : It’s almost 62 years, a great time. And I think we only really fought once. But I wasn’t at home that often either, traveling a lot. After all, my job came after football – it took a lot of time. I drove around 70,000 to 80,000 kilometers a year in my car.
How will you spend your anniversary on November 5th?
Seeler : We celebrate in a small group, only with the family. At home with us. From 10:30 in the morning until the sons-in-law are dark and have to go home. But seriously: we stay at home, there is roulade and red cabbage. And also wine and beer. Both, not just one! But we don’t need to worry about the drinks, the sons-in-law do that, everything is ordered and organized.
To person : Uwe Seeler (84) is one of the greatest football legends.
