Globetrotter Obermann died at the age of 85

The former professional footballer, “Sport im Third” presenter and development worker Holger Obermann died at the age of 85. SWR editor Alf Spatscheck remembers.

At the end of the 1980s, Holger Obermann moved from Hessischer Rundfunk to what was then Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) for a few years. He was a soccer reporter, director and presenter of “Sport im third”. His sporting highlight during this time was the commentary on the 1989 UEFA Cup final between VfB Stuttgart and SSC Napoli with Diego Maradona.

Obermann was committed to charity

During the time of Holger Obermann, viewers were invited to “Sport in the Third” for the first time, and Holger Obermann was the founder of the “FC Sport in the Third”. This team, composed of members of the editorial board and celebrity kickers like Karl Allgöwer, Buffy Ettmayer and many others, played for charity. Over the years more than 500,000 DM came together.

Moderator with charm and sensitivity

Personally, I remember a “Sport im Third” show that we played together. He as a moderator, I as a young editor. The guest that evening was the tennis player Gabriela Sabatini. The Argentine was a world star. A short opening talk with her was planned for the show, followed by football. Apparently, Holger was so fascinated by the Argentine that he slightly overshadowed the opening talk. Two minutes became 20 minutes.

He also brought this show over the stage, with a lot of charm, sensitivity and interest in the guest. Holger Obermann liked people and he could get on with people. Holger Obermann was a real philanthropist.
