Koblenz The 2024 European Football Championship in Germany is set to be the most sustainable EURO in history. The head of organization Philipp Lahm formulated this claim in Koblenz in front of the interior and sports ministers of the federal states.
“We want to show that major events and sustainability go hand in hand if they are intelligently planned. Sustainability has to play a role in every decision we make. That’s our big job, ”said Lahm.
“Set goals and pursue them together”
In order to cope with this, broad support is required. “We as Germany have to set goals and pursue them together,” the 37-year-old world champion from 2014 appealed to politicians and emphasized: “We want to be the future and make a difference.”
Suggestions from the population are expressly welcome. An impulse survey is currently running under the hashtag # 2024undDu. “We actively encourage people to contribute their ideas. Everyone can take part ”, reported EURO ambassador Celia Sasic. You want to “listen and understand, and then start at the right places,” added Lahm.
Bavaria’s Minister of the Interior, Joachim Herrmann, emphasized in this context: “We are not building any new giant things anywhere in the landscape, but the existing sports facilities are being used. That is a very crucial aspect. ”EURO 2024 will take place in a total of ten German cities.
According to Herrmann, there are also modern and contemporary concepts for sustainability, for example in the area of mobility. “We don’t want to know everything better from Germany,” said the CSU politician, “but we want to demonstrate: You can organize major international sporting events today in harmony with our environment.”
