Mainz Bo Svensson is not yet a year at Mainz 05, but has already led the club from the bottom up close to the international places. Gladbach wants to keep the form of the past weeks after the weak start to the season.
Floodlights, almost 25,000 spectators and the chance to jump into the Champions League ranks: For FSV Mainz 05, this Bundesliga evening against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the evening (8.30 p.m. / DAZN) must feel like a great reward.
The relegation was successfully prevented under Bo Svensson, the new season is going excellent – and the fans are gradually coming back to the Mainzer Arena in larger numbers.
The foals that were rated stronger before the season could – if they win at home – be distanced to five points at the start of the 11th match day. But after the 5-0 coup against Bayern and the subsequent confirmation in the league, the guests from the Lower Rhine also have a lot of self-confidence.
The initial situation: Like almost every year, Mainz was traded as a relegation candidate and Gladbach as a European contender before the season. Neither of these applies so far. With great efficiency and a stable defense, the Mainz team, who can conquer fourth place with a win, have so far been one of the better Bundesliga teams. Gladbach lags a little behind the points target, has already shown what is possible with this squad both in the league (1-0 against Dortmund) and in the furious success in the cup against the record champions from Munich.
The offensive rows: Both rows of attacks have potential for more than the previous 14 or twelve goals. At Gladbach, the long-injured striker Marcus Thuram is currently returning and applying for a regular place. But neither the system nor the competition for Breel Embolo and the strong Jonas Hofmann make it easy for him. Mainz has four good strikers, especially DFB candidate Jonathan Burkardt.
The trainers: Svensson got the 05er out of the Bundesliga basement within ten months and awakened new dreams. The current soaring is no coincidence, the Mainz team already played great football in the previous series and scored reliably. The start was anything but easy for Gladbach’s coach Adi Hütter, but the latest results are giving the Austrian a boost. If Borussia wins in Mainz, the connection to the international ranks is established.
