The Rhein-Neckar Löwen have signed national handball goalkeeper Joel Birlehm. The 24-year-old will move from Bundesliga rivals SC DHfK Leipzig to Mannheim in the summer of 2023, as both clubs announced on Thursday.
The “Mannheimer Morgen” had previously reported on the transfer. In addition to Birlehm’s commitment, the Löwen also announced the extension of their contract with 19-year-old David Späth.
“With Joel and David we have an excellent long-term position in the so important goalkeeping position, and with Mikael Appelgren a world-class goalkeeper who will hopefully be back on the record soon,” said Managing Director Jennifer Kettemann. Birlehm is currently preparing with the national team in Düsseldorf for two international test matches against Portugal on November 5th and 7th.
