Liverpool in cruise control against Atlético

Liverpool are currently in cruise control at Anfield against Diego Simeone’s Atlético de Madrid.

First-half goals from Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota, both from delicious passes from Trent Alexander-Arnold, ensured Liverpool were in a commanding position even before a rare red card for Atleti’s Felipe made the game. it will effectively end as a match.

The result (should it hold) means the Reds are group winners, now 7 points ahead of second-placed Porto, with six points at stake. Jurgen Klopp’s team has yet to travel to Milan, in addition to hosting Porto, but the results are irrelevant to their group progression.

Double injury blow for Jurgen Klopp

The result and what it means for the Merseyside team was somewhat overshadowed by a couple of injury problems suffered by the Reds.

Going into the game, James Milner and Naby Keita were already injured, while Curtis Jones and Joe Gomez did not make the team of the day due to blows. Worse still, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fell briefly before continuing for five minutes until he was substituted, threatening to further stretch the already threadbare midfield resources.

There was another more worrisome blow for the Reds, samba forward Roberto Firmino was injured and headed straight down the tunnel, not even sitting with his teammates for the rest of the game.

This could leave Klopp without players during what is expected to be a very busy period after the international break, although he expects most to have recovered during that time.

By the weekend, however, they could be down to the basics.
