Joao Cancelo sets the Champions League record with his performance against Club Brugge

Manchester City beat Club Brugges

Manchester City fulfilled their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League round of 16 with a resounding 4-1 victory over Club Brugges at the Etihad Stadium.

Phil Foden opened the scoring in the 15th minute, only for the Belgian side to strike back immediately thanks to a deflection from John Stones.

Undeterred, City made it 2-1 just before time through Riyad Mahrez, before Raheem Sterling added a third with 18 minutes remaining. Gabriel Jesus had just injury time to round the score and lead Manchester City to nine points and lead their group with two games to play.

A point against Paris Saint Germain in their next game will see them pass, while a win would see them emerge as group winners.

Cancelo provides assists hat-trick

One of the main talking points of the game was the performance of the Portuguese side Joao Cancelo. The defender (who often throws himself forward) put up three assists for the Citizens in an exceptional performance across the board.

In doing so, he became the first defender since Achraf Hakimi (in 2018) to provide an assists hat-trick in a Champions League match, a truly impressive feat. Cancelo, who is traditionally a right back, has been playing left on defense more frequently in recent months due to Benjamin Mendy’s legal suspension and fitness issues for Oleksander Zinchenko.

The City faithful hope to replicate their brilliant performance in three days, when they face Manchester United under pressure for home loot.
