Why Antonio Conte did not join Tottenham Hotspur in the summer

Antonio Conte is Tottenham’s new coach

Following the departure of Nuno Espirito Santo following a humiliating 3-0 loss to Manchester United under pressure from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Tottenham have announced that Antonio Conte has taken over as head coach.

The deal sees Conte with an initial 18-month contract, with the option to extend it if the relationship prospers. Speaking in a Official statement, Conte said:

“I am very happy to be a coach again and to do so in a Premier League club that has the ambition to be a protagonist again.

“Tottenham Hotspur has state-of-the-art facilities and one of the best stadiums in the world.

“I am looking forward to working to transmit to the team and the fans the passion, mentality and determination that have always distinguished me, as a player and as a coach.

Why didn’t you join the club in summer

Of course, Conte was Tottenham’s number one managerial pick last summer as well, but he ultimately didn’t move to North London. And now, on his first day in charge, he revealed why, saying:

“Last summer our union did not materialize because the end of my relationship with Inter was still too recent and emotionally too involved with the end of the season, so I felt that it was not yet the right time to be a coach again”

So what changed? Well, according to Conte, it was Daniel Levy’s efforts that changed his mind:

“Daniel Levy’s infectious enthusiasm and determination in entrusting me with this task had already hit the mark. Now that the opportunity has returned, I have chosen to seize it with great conviction ”.
