Tottenham seeks to prevent José Mourinho from repeating while details of Antonio Conte's possible contract are revealed

Spurs part ways with Nuno, expected to name Antonio Conte

Following a humiliating 3-0 loss to out-of-form Manchester United, it emerged on Monday morning that Tottenham Hotspur had parted ways with manager Nuno Espirito Santo, just four months (and 17 games) after his appointment.

In an official statement, the club revealed:

The Club can announce today that Nuno Espírito Santo and his coaching staff Ian Cathro, Rui Barbosa and Antonio Dias have been relieved of their duties.

Fabio Paratici, Managing Director of Football, said: “I know how much Nuno and his coaching staff wanted to succeed and I am sorry that we had to make this decision.

“Nuno is a true gentleman and will always be welcome here. We want to thank him and his coaching staff and wish them the best for the future ”.

Antonio Conte is now widely expected to take the reins in North London, having left his previous position at Inter Milan in the summer.

His appointment will certainly be seen as a declaration of intent, but have the Spurs been down this road before?

The contract shows that the Spurs seek to avoid the repetition of Mourinho

Signing a previously successful series winner at Inter Milan and Chelsea? That will sound familiar to Spurs fans, and they have just recovered from the boring style of football instilled by José Mourinho, who left the club in May and for whom Spurs are still working towards a £ 15 million reward.

Mourinho left with just 18 months on a three-year contract, leaving Spurs needing to pay the rest of his contract, as they will have to do with Nuno as well.

However, this is a cycle that they seek to break with Antonio Conte. According to reports coming from Sky Italy, the club is looking to appoint the Italian to an eighteen-month contract, which would give the club more flexibility in case everything goes wrong.

Of course, there is one other side that Tottenham must be careful of. Should Conte arrive and prove a success, he will have the club over a barrel next summer when it comes to transfers as he only has 12 months left on his contract and the Spurs wouldn’t want to lose him.

It is a delicately balanced situation and one that the club will have to handle with care, perhaps something beyond the leadership in North London.
