Four days after the cup sensation in Leverkusen, Karlsruher SC went under against Paderborn. After all: The appearance in the second half gives hope. And the next challenge is already waiting.
Christian Eichner was looking forward to a short break. “That was an extremely emotional week for the boys,” said the coach of Karlsruher SC after the 2: 4 (0: 4) against SC Paderborn. This Tuesday, the Badeners have free, starting Wednesday they prepare for their next difficult home game next Saturday (8:30 p.m.) against Hamburger SV. If the Karlsruher want to keep up with the top group of the 2nd Bundesliga, then they have to be mentally fresher again than on Sunday.
Paderborn overrun the Karlsruhe defense
“In the first half it took my boys an extremely long time from head to legs. By the time we got down to what we had to do, the opponent was already over the top,” said Eichner about the desperate performance of his team before the half-time break. Just four days after the surprising victory at Bayer Leverkusen in the second round of the DFB Cup, the KSC was overrun by the Paderborn in phases. The 0: 1 by Julian Justvan (20th minute) was followed by a hat trick by Sven Michel (23rd, 29th, 32nd). Even before the break, the game was decided – and the fans’ euphoria gave way to a slight horror. There were even whistles from the stands.
KSC shows reaction after the break
Eichner was pleased that the Karlsruhe team did not surrender defenselessly to their fate in the second half. “All in all, the team’s reaction was extremely important,” he said. After the connection hits by Fabian Schleusener (68th) and Philipp Hofmann (70th), KSC threw everything forward. A penalty for the hosts was withdrawn, in the end it was the fourth defeat of the season.
Lack of constancy at the KSC
However, the KSC cannot get rid of its fluctuations in performance. Lately, victory and defeat alternated with regularity. And against HSV it should be emotional again. The sting of the lost Bundesliga relegation against Hamburg in 2015 is still deep in the people of Baden. A cool head is required at KSC.
