Nigel Winterburn echoes Thierry Henry’s fears about Arsenal’s performance level

Former gunner Nigel Winterburn echoes Thierry Henry's fears about Arsenal's level of performance

Thierry Henry questions Arteta’s Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has seen his end come to an end at Arsenal with draws against Brighton and Crystal Palace. Although he remains unbeaten in 5 Premier League games, the last two games have seen his side outclassed in big swaths of the game, only holding on to draws both times.

However, one person who has yet to become fully involved in the process is Arsenal legend Thierry Henry. The Arsenal legend, who scored 228 goals in 376 games for the then Arsene Wenger-led team, has not been less than convinced by the performances and the results, notably the recent Brighton match in particular.

Speaking at the 2021 Prime Video Presents Sport exhibition event, and quoted by Sun, the former French international said:

“I don’t know if things are going in the right direction. I watched the Brighton game. You saw it?”

“I’ve seen us beat Norwich before, win at Burnley, beat Tottenham at home, because we always beat Tottenham at home.

“I was more than happy when we beat Tottenham because we had a good run but I was expecting to see a performance, away from home, against a team that passes the ball.

“And instead we suffer.”

Henry added:

“I was looking forward to the Brighton game, to see if we could have the ball and keep it, away from home, retaining possession, against a dangerous Brighton team.

“When we used to lose, even after I left the team, it was always said that ‘Arsenal don’t have a Plan B’ and that they had too much to go through.

“But I didn’t see that from Arsenal in the Brighton game. I saw Brighton do that. “

Nigel Winterburn echoes Henry’s fears

Talking to FreeSuperTips, former Arsenal great Nigel Winterburn joined Thierry Henry in questioning the performances. The defender made more than 400 appearances for the Gunners and appeared in one of the best defensive units of all time alongside Tony Adams, Lee Dixon, Martin Keown and Steve Bould.

When asked if he shared Henry’s fears, Winterburn said:

“I think you have to share them because there is too much inconsistency in the level of performances.

Although you will never replicate Tottenham’s performance in every game, I would like to think that we can be much closer to that performance compared to the last two.

What I will give credit to Mikel Arteta and the team is the fact that they stayed there and fought for the points.

However, he was quick to take advantage of the team’s team spirit and continued:

When you look at the negatives, you should also look at the positives and they kept trying to find a way back to the game against Palace.

It looked like it wasn’t going to happen after Tierney hit the crossbar, but with Lacazette coming in it made a difference.

I like that that part of the team shows some fighting, but the level of performances is still too far apart. “
