Leeds confirms status of key pair Bamford and Phillips for Southampton clash

Leeds confirms status of key pair Bamford and Phillips for Southampton clash

Leeds United have a difficult start to the season

After the euphoria of last season, winning the Premier League this season has proved a much more difficult task for Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds United.

The Yorkshire team recorded their first win of the season on Matchday 7, in a 1-0 win over Watford that saw the Hornets later part ways with Xisco Muñoz. For Leeds it was also momentous, as the club drew three and lost three of their previous 6.

Now, they face Southampton, which is one of four teams in the division that has yet to win a game, in a clash that would see the winner potentially jump at least three points from the relegation zone. For Leeds, it feels like a game they must win early in the season if they want to gain momentum between now and the next international break.

Team news a mixed bag

Ahead of the Southampton clash, Marcelo Bielsa provided an update on star duo Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips, and it’s mixed news for the Leeds faithful.

On Bamford, Bielsa revealed that the forward will miss the match due to an ankle injury suffered before the international break.

However, the news was more positive for Phillips, who retired from the England squad but has a chance to be fit for the trip to St Mary’s in the afternoon from Saturay.

There was equally disturbing news for star man Raphinha, who will represent Brazil in the early hours of Friday morning. Bielsa revealed that:

“There is no doubt that it is a short change. The option you have to participate on Saturday depends on whether you play this last match (for Brazil), how many minutes you play, how the match ends and how efficient your break is ”.

“Considering that a third of those hours (before Southampton) will fly by, if there is any risk that fatigue could cause injury, then we will not take the risk. There are so many aspects to consider that I cannot offer any certainty. “

In case Leeds do not have the three key men, can they still get a much-needed result to give them back-to-back victories?
