Olivier Giroud wins the Puskas award

Giroud trades North London for the Blues

In January 2018, Olivier Giroud was part of a triangle of deals in which Michy Batshuayi moved from Chelsea to Dortmund, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined Arsenal and the Frenchman ended up in Chelsea. The deal for the then 31-year-old cost the Blues a sum of around 15 million pounds, and he has scored 39 goals in 119 games for Chelsea.

Now at AC Milan, Giroud has struggled to get up and running due to covid-19 and injury, but has nevertheless scored 2 of 5 for the Rossoneri as they now rank second in Serie A.

But how do you feel about your previous clubs?

Giroud admits it was harder for him to leave Chelsea than Arsenal

Talking to talkSPORT Breakfast., Giroud revealed that it was harder for him to leave Chelsea than Arsenal or Montpellier, telling listeners:

“[I spent] three and a half seasons there [at Chelsea], ”

“I had an incredible time at Arsenal, but [at Chelsea] I can say even more because I won the great titles.

“It was emotionally difficult to leave when I left Montpellier and Arsenal, but even harder. [at Chelsea] because I didn’t play the last three months, so it was proof that I was going away and throwing myself into another challenge.

The French forward elaborated in more detail:

“I felt a bit frustrated not playing the last three months because I contributed well to the success of the Champions League by finishing as the team’s top scorer.

But what can I say? We were very successful and I am very satisfied with the FA Cup, the Europa League and the Champions League. I scored some big goals.

“It was difficult to leave Chelsea and the Premier League, but at the end of the day I think it was the best solution for me.”

For Arsenal fans, who watched the Frenchman for six years at the Emirates, it must come as a shock to hear these comments from a man who scored more than 100 times for the club.
