“We have to work twice as hard”: Kalibou Koulibaly criticizes FIFA for the great slight to Edouard Mendy’s Ballon d’Or candidate

Edouard Mendy’s stellar season

Edouard Mendy was seen largely as an endorsement when he was signed from Lille 18 months ago in a move of £ 21 million (according to transfermarkt). However, he quickly became the undisputed number one at Stamford Bridge, helping his team to a famous Champions League victory with some crucial saves in both the semi-final and final.

He has continued in this vein again this season, and has again been crucial in Chelsea’s current good form, with the most goals prevented in the Premier League so far. Unlike his predecessor, Mendy has apparently inspired confidence in his Blues bottom line, which has conceded just three goals in seven Premier League games.

Should he have been a candidate for the Ballon d’Or?

Despite her stellar campaign, Mendy’s name was not in the open when nominations for the Ballon d’Or were announced last week. While 5 of his club mates were on the list, the Goalkeeper was conspicuously absent.

Speaking during the international break, after the Senegal-Namibia clash, Mendy Kalidou’s national team mate Koulibaly was quick to point this out, criticizing FIFA for its decision to saying:

“We have to do double the work to be well evaluated. It’s a shame Edouard isn’t one of the nominees. He is the first African goalkeeper to win the Champions League. We have to keep working. He is a very nice person. positive. I already told him about this and he will continue to fight to be there. For me, it deserved to have a place in the 30s. “

Is Koulibaly right, or was Mendy overlooked for the award?
