Why Arsenal trade for Liverpool's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlin makes sense

Arsenal linked to the return of Oxlade-Chamberlain

A recent report from the Sun has attributed Arsenal an interest in former player Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Oxlade-Chamberlain would join Arsenal in 2011 from Southampton and went on to enjoy six years at the club.

The midfielder may not have lived up to expectations, but he remained a very useful asset at Arsenal.

However, the now 28-year-old would sign with Liverpool in August 2017 for a fee that is reported to be around. £ 34 million.

Since his move to Merseyside, Chamberlain has appeared 109 times with Liverpool, scoring 14 and assisting 12.

And although he now holds Premier League and Champions League medals, Chamberlain has never been able to maintain a regular starting position for Jurgen Klopp’s team.

This is due, in part, to injury issues, including a cruciate ligament tear that caused him to miss 43 games and a knee injury that caused him to miss 20 games for Liverpool (according to transfermarket).

Now, according to the Sun, Arsenal are weighing a move for the Englishman, who are said to have been frustrated by their lack of opportunities:

Why a move makes sense for the Liverpool midfielder

The Sun adds that Arsenal are interested in an initial six-month loan with the possibility of a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Such a move, on paper, seems like an excellent deal for all parties.

One of the main reasons for this is due to Arsenal’s midfield problems. Granit Xhaka is currently offside, while Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny depart in January for the African Cup of Nations.

This would leave only Xhaka (if he fits), and the inexperienced pair of Albert Sambi Lokonga and Ainsley Maitland-Niles as viable central midfield options.

However, if Arsenal were to sign Chamberlain, they would add a very experienced midfielder to their ranks in, if they have their way, a simple loan deal.

Chamberlain is also quite versatile, so you can also cover later if you need to.

And, if his return to Arsenal doesn’t work out, then it shouldn’t be a big deal if Mikel Arteta and co. They can get it on the informed six-month loan first before committing to any purchase.
