The former Arsenal striker sends a warning to Gabriel Martinelli

The former Arsenal striker sends a warning to Gabriel Martinelli

Martinelli fighting for minutes

Gabriel Martinelli joined Arsenal in July 2019. It is understood that the Gunners paid a little more £ 6 million for the Brazilian.

Martinelli was one of Arsenal’s bright sparks during his debut in the 2019/20 season.

The 20-year-old scored 10 and helped four in 26 outings for the Gunners, including this impressive individual effort against Chelsea in the Premier League:

However, the Brazilian’s campaign came to a premature end when he suffered a knee injury, which also caused him to miss the start of 2020/21.

Martinelli would eventually return to action in the middle of last season, but he has yet to rediscover the form he found during the early days of his career at Arsenal.

However, it is the 2021/22 campaign that appears to be Martinelli’s biggest concern, as Arsenal now have no European football to hand over their fringe stars for minutes.

Former Arsenal star sends warning to Martinelli

Martinelli started Arsenal’s best league games of the season. But now that Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have returned, the South American has not come off the bench in the North Londoners’ next five league games.

Now, with Martinelli seemingly only for very limited minutes this season, the young forward received a warning from a former Arsenal striker.

Speaking to Football Insider recently, Kevin Campbell cautioned that Martinelli has to take a chance whenever they show up:

“Martinelli is only 20 years old. He is still learning his trade. Arsenal can’t go wrong signing a top young international striker like Watkins or Calvert-Lewin.

“Lacazette will not be there next season. Martinelli will have his chances. The key is to wear them.

“Nobody has time anymore. You will not be chosen just because you are a young player who needs experience. You need to be doing business to keep going. Martinelli has to seize his opportunity when it comes. That has been the case with soccer since I was a child.

“There are not so many games this season without European football, so when the opportunity presents itself, it is very important that you make the most of it.”
