Mason Mount on chances of beating Messi and more for Ballon d’Or glory

Chelsea's Mason Mount talks about chances of beating Lionel Messi in Ballon d'Or glory

Chelsea star Mason Mount responded to his inclusion on the shortlist for the upcoming Ballon d’Or on Monday.

Messi joins Pedri and more

Of course, the latest round of Ballon d’Or nominees was announced late last week.

After the award ceremony, widely regarded as the most prestigious individual accolade in world soccer, was last canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the first ‘Ballon d’Or’ in nearly two years will be awarded by the end of the next month.

Regular heavy hitters were present on France Football’s shortlist of finalists, including the two most successful players in the history of the award, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, along with Robert Lewandowski, Neymar, Erling Haaland and another previous winner: Luka Modric.

Also honored with the inclusions were Barcelona sensation Pedri, Italian Euro 2020 winners Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci, and even Simon Kjaer, due to their heroic answer to the terrifying cardiac arrest of Christian Eriksen during the summer:

Lewandowski, Salah, Jorginho, Azpilicueta, Lukaku, Ronaldo, Foden, Gerard Moreno, Mbappé, Suárez, De Bruyne, Dias, Kjaer, Neymar, Lautaro Martínez, Messi, pedri, Chiellini, Bruno Fernandes, Modric, Mahrez, Haaland, Edge, Mount, Bonucci, Donnarumma, Kane, Benzema, Camilla, Sterling

‘You never know …’

As things stand, it is of course that Messi is seen as the betting shops‘favorite to win a historic seventh Ballon d’Or crown, after a long triumph in the Copa América with Argentina.

However, other favorites include Robert Lewandowski and Chelsea couple N’Golo Kante and Jorginho.

Thomas Tuchel’s Blues had the most joint nominations of any club, joining fellow Champions League finalists Manchester City with five.

And, as described above, on Monday one of Chelsea’s shortlisted stars relied on his chances to add his name to the prestigious list of Ballon d’Or winners.

The player in question? Mason Mount.

Speaking to the media ahead of England’s World Cup qualifying clash with Hungary tomorrow night, Mount was drawn in by the recognition of his talent on a global scale.

‘It was special’ the midfielder explained.

‘Seeing that and being with their names is obviously a dream. For all the years that you work hard and dedicate yourself, seeing something like this shows that everything is worth it and it is only the beginning. It doesn’t stop now. ‘

However, when drawn directly from his chances of altering the established order to secure the accolade in November, Mount was eager to downplay that possibility:

‘I doubt it, but you never know.’

‘The most important thing for me is that I keep trying to reach the levels that I set before and go even further. That has always been my mindset and I hope it continues that way. ‘
