Georginio Wijnaldum offers worrying update on his future at PSG

Georginio Wijnaldum offers worrying update on his future at PSG

Wijnaldum swaps Liverpool for Paris

Wijnaldum moved to Paris Saint Germain from Ligue 1 this summer, after being informed that his contract would not be extended in Merseyside beyond its expiration in June. The Dutchman had appeared in all 38 Premier League games for Jurgen Klopp’s side, which made the move somewhat disconcerting, but it fits into Liverpool’s policy of regenerating the team as he is now 30 years old.

As a result, he joined Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos and Lionel Messi to be added for free to PSG’s squad, making them favorites for this season’s Champions League after heartbreak in the 2019 final at the hands of the Bayern Munich.

Wijnaldum is already unhappy

Perhaps unsurprisingly, as a result of such a strong team, competition for places is fierce and playing time is not guaranteed in the same way as in Merseyside. Because of this, the Dutchman has started only six of the 12 possible matches for the Parisians, and another five from the bench.

Given his regularity in starting with Liverpool, this has clearly come as a shock to Wijnaldum, who revealed in an interview with NOS that he was unhappy starting so infrequently. The former Liverpool player said:

“To be honest, I can’t say I’m completely happy [at Paris Saint-Germain] because the situation is not what I wanted. Sometimes if you don’t play, it’s worrying “

Will Wijnaldum be able to work his way back to Mauricio Pochettino’s plans for the rest of the season, or is this the start of a quick and messy divorce from PSG?
