Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk describes the 'great challenge' that Curtis Jones will face

Curtis Jones steps forward

Harvey Elliott, of course, would suffer an injury against Leeds United last month.

Prior to this, Elliott had cemented a regular starting position in Liverpool’s midfield three and was forming great partnerships with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold down Liverpool’s right flank.

But with Elliott now injured and Thiago grappling with some troubles of his own, Jurgen Klopp has sought out another young talent to fill the void in his midfield.

That man is Curtis Jones, 20 years old. Jones had a strong turnout in 2020/21 due to Liverpool’s injury issues and once again he has a chance to shine this period as well.

And so far, Jones has done exactly that, scoring one goal and one assist in three league ties, as well as providing two assists in Liverpool’s Champions League win over FC Porto.

Now, Virgil van Dijk has been talking about the youngster from Liverpool.

And in doing so, Van Dijk stated that the big challenge Jones will face is being consistent, but that he has done a good job of achieving it so far:

“Unfortunately, Harvey got injured as everyone knows, of course, and he was doing very well.

“It was probably difficult for Curtis to see that a little bit because he obviously wanted to play, but he saw Harvey do so well. Now he had to take a chance.

“At the moment, I think if you look at our midfield, Naby is still doing very well, Oxlade is doing very well, so it’s not easy to be there.

“Obviously, in the last two games he has shown that he has the quality to be there and he is doing well.

“He is still young, he is still learning, he has a great mentality. It has to continue like this. It’s just the beginning for him and he has to keep showing it.

“The hardest part of being a soccer player is being consistent, so it will be a great challenge for him. But so far, everything is fine. “
