The key area Arsenal must address in January transfer window

The key area Arsenal must address in January transfer window

Arsenal spends well

Arsenal had a fairly active summer transfer window in which a number of key areas were addressed.

An endorsement / competition was brought in for Bernd Leno in the form of Aaron Ramsdale, who has now usurped German as the Gunners’ No. 1.

Kieran Tierney’s coverage was also signed in the form of Nuno Tavares, while Takehiro Tomiyasu has already established himself as Arsenal’s new No. 1 right-back following the loan of Héctor Bellerin.

Later on, Martin Odegaard was returned to the club, this time permanently, to ensure that Arsenal had adequate creativity going forward.

All of these players were also under 24 at the time of signing and looking to represent some smart North London businesses.

The area to be addressed by Arsenal

However, there is one area that Arsenal did not address too well and are likely to be forced to do so in January.

That area is the central midfield. Of course, Albert Sambi Lokonga has been hired. But while the Belgian is a promising talent, he is not ready to be one of Arsenal’s two main central midfielders.

Mikel Arteta also thought clearly about this since, when he was fit and available, Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka have been his preferred partner.

And it is easy to see why. When paired with a dominant, prowling midfielder like Partey, we usually see the best of Xhaka, whose ability to control a game from midfield can sometimes be overlooked given the Swiss star’s hasty disposition.

But while it’s only a small sample against a fit team, the weekend’s draw against Brighton, which Xhaka missed due to injury, showed the Gunners struggling to control a game without the former Borussia Monchengladbach player.

Xhaka’s wound is expected to keep it out until the end of December. And once he returns, Arsenal will lose Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny to the African Cup of Nations, which will take place between 9 and February 6th.

Although Lokonga and Maitland-Niles can come in to cover Partey, we have already seen that neither of these players, nor Elneny, can do the same job as Xhaka or Partey.

So it seems pretty obvious that Arsenal need to hire a winter window-ready central midfielder who is already capable of doing the exact same job as Partey or Xhaka.
