When England reached the final, Raheem Sterling was key to their progress. The Manchester City man scored three times in 7 games and provided another assist to help the Three Lions exit the group stage at the top of the group.

For Sterling, however, the applause sounds hollow, with the English saying in an interview with Sky sports:

“There are still people who say congratulations or something like that and it’s like … there’s not much to congratulate because we didn’t win.”

“That’s the best within the team, we are not happy with doing it well and putting on a show for the country, we really wanted to go home with that trophy and that’s the mentality in the team now.

“It was class, we went to the final but we want to win, we want to make history, and I think that’s the message from day one when Gareth (Southgate) came in.”

Sterling reveals one thing Southgate has done absolutely well

For Sterling, one of the biggest changes has been off the court. From personal experience, he knows very well the vitriol that England players have been exposed to in years past. However, he highlighted what is perhaps the most important thing Southgate has gotten right during his tenure as England manager.

The point in question? Getting the media back on the side of the players, instead of against them.

The English winger said:

“I feel like when I first entered the camp, it was more of them against us, the media against the players.”

“When Gareth came in, he made it very clear what his intentions were, they were to make England challenge on all fronts, to make us challenge at the European Championship and at the World Cups.

“If we were going to do that, we had to change the perception in the media, the public and us the players; We all had to be one if we wanted to achieve something with the national team.

“From the moment he (Southgate) came in, he really tried to work to build that relationship with the media and the fans and I think he has done a fantastic job doing it.”

Will the renewed unit result in success in the field going forward?
