Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell describes his hope for the 2021/22 season

Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell describes his hope for the 2021/22 season

Ben Chilwell struggles for minutes

Ben Chilwell has become something of a fringe star of late. The left back was not used for the first time at Euro 2020 by Gareth Southgate.

And, despite finishing 2020/21 as Thomas Tuchel’s main left-back, he would see Marcos Alonso take his place during the start of the new campaign.

Chilwell, despite not being injured, was forced to sit on the bench for Chelsea’s first six games of the Premier League season.

However, the 24-year-old is slowly starting to regain a regular spot under Tuchel. Chilwell participated for 45 minutes against Juventus in the Champions League, in addition to completing 90 minutes against Aston Villa in the League Cup.

Chelsea defender Chilwell’s hope for the current season

And now, last weekend, Chilwell had his first start and appearance of PL’s campaign, playing the full 90 minutes as the Londoners beat Southampton 3-1 with Chilwell scoring a key goal.

On the back of that goal, Chilwell has outlined his hope for the 2021/22 season.

The defender was a fairly prolific contributor of goals and assists last season and, after coming off the mark against Southampton, Chilwell has now expressed hope that he can improve his goal contribution figures this season:

“He definitely lives up to my best goals. It was instinctive, it just hit the back post. The goalkeeper was either on the ground or near the other post, so I thought if he hit the target he had a good chance.

“The coach was happy that he was in position to score. I had a couple of chances in the first half, the second could have done better, the first was a good save.

“If you look at my statistics from last year, four goals, seven assists, I did quite well in that regard, but you can always improve. I am never satisfied with what I have done and I hope my numbers are better than last season and I can continue to improve in an offensive sense.
