Manchester United cult hero Park Ji Sung calls for derogatory chant to stop

Manchester United vs Liverpool rivalry leads to outrageous chant

The rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool is one that has been traced back generations, and continues to throw some of the biggest games on the football calendar, especially with the resurgence the Merseyside club has made under Jurgen Klopp.

One of the most outrageous parts of the rivalry has been the chants aimed at each respective group of fans, including one in particular that the Manchester United faithful established around their Ji Sung Park cult.

The South Korean midfielder made 204 Red Devil appearances with Sir Alex Ferguson, and was always famous for his ability to take on tactical information, making him the man Ferguson would turn to in bigger matches.

As such, he developed a great bond with the Manchester faithful, but they in turn used it to catch a glimpse of their Merseyside rivals, chanting:

“Park, park, wherever you are

You eat dog in your own country

It could be worse, you could be Scouse

Eating rats in the council house ”

Park Ji Sung talks about the song

However, when speaking to Manchester United’s official channel about the song, Park pleaded with Manchester United fans to stop singing it due to its racial overtones. saying:

“I know the United fans don’t mean any offense to him because of that song, but I have yet to educate the fans to drop that word. [dog meat], which these days is often a racial slur to the Korean people. “

Hearing the chant even 10 years later, I feel sorry for the younger self who tried to overcome this discomfort that I felt back then.

“I also feel responsible for young people who are still discriminated against as Asian or Korean and who struggle with that kind of discomfort.”

He went on to point out the changes that had occurred since singing, stating:

“In Korea, things have changed a lot. It is true that historically we have eaten dog meat, but these days, especially the younger generation, they really dislike it. The culture has changed. “

“I really ask the fans to stop singing that word. It causes discomfort to Koreans when they listen to that song. It’s time to stop. “

Manchester United added that they “fully support Ji-sung’s comments and urge fans to respect his wishes.”
