Tuchel’s sentences highlighted by penalty incident in Southampton win

Thomas Tuchel proved right about two Chelsea wingers, one current and one former, in the late win over Southampton

The forceful sequence of play that came so close to costing Chelsea two points in their meeting with Southampton this afternoon made Thomas Tuchel’s judgments prove correct, not on one, but two players.

Werner between goals

Of course, the Blues were back in action recently.

After slipping to defeat at the hands of Juventus in the Champions League in the middle of the week, the club’s second straight game in all competitions, Tuchel and company. welcomed Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with his sights set on a return to winning ways.

And when Trevoh Chalobah opened the game in the middle of a dominant first half in the English capital, Chelsea looked well on their way to that.

However, Southampton refused to go down without a fight and eventually rose through the ranks early in the second half as James Ward-Prowse stepped in to concede at home confidently from the penalty spot.

But the visiting captain soon went from hero to nil, opening the door for Chelsea to regain control thanks to an unnecessary red card.

And from here on, reestablishing dominance is precisely what the home team did, taking the lead once again through Timo Werner’s close-range shot, before Ben Chilwell added some sparkle to the scoreboard with a final third.

Tuchel vindicated?

However, as described above, despite his eventual triumph, the proceedings, at one point this afternoon, seemed of a totally concerning nature to everyone associated with Chelsea.

This came as the score was tied, as Southampton was allowed a frankly unnecessary route back to proceedings by one of the hosts’ defenders.

Guilty? Ben Chilwell.

Yes, Chilwell finally took third place from the Blues on Saturday, and he looked like a threat going forward.

However, the fact is that in his only defensive challenge of the day, the English international was left with a lot of desire, destroying Tino Livramento unnecessarily.

Meanwhile, an interesting side note when it comes to the Southampton penalty incident, comes in the form of decision-making by Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel.

Chilwell, of course, has been confined to the sidelines for most of the first few weeks of the season, with Marcos Alonso favoring his more glamorous and wealthy competition on the left back.

And although the former was eventually unleashed by Ward-Prowse against Southampton, such a poor defense in a one-on-one situation could and probably would have cost the Blues dearly against a superior team.

Not only that, but the man Chilwell eliminated in the Chelsea area, in the form of Tino Livramento, was praised yesterday by his now former boss.

Building on the talented young stopper’s decision to leave Stamford Bridge for St. Mary’s for the summer, Tuchel admitted that if he had had his way, Livramento would have stayed, to play an increasingly prominent role in the West London for the next few seasons:

“We did everything we could to keep him here and show him his future, to compete for a position on our team. Decided to leave, no hard feelings. Of course, he was competing with Reece and Azpi for the winger position. There was a great chance for him to go all the way. It’s fair enough, we wish him all the best. We saw the potential. ‘

Were the Chelsea manager’s judgments regarding Chilwell and Livramento correct in the space of five seconds on Saturday afternoon?
