Thomas Tuchel questions why injured Chelsea star was called up for England

Thomas Tuchel questions why injured Chelsea star was called up for England

Reece James injured against Manchester City

After being taken to Euro 2020 but making only one appearance, Reece James returned to Chelsea, where he has made four Premier League appearances to date, returning one goal and three assists from the right side.

However, midway through the first half of his team’s tie with Manchester City, his brilliant start to the season ended abruptly when he was forced to leave the pitch due to injury.

Chelsea lost the game 1-0 and James has not appeared in the week since his injury.

James ruled out of international half-time matches

Despite his injury, Reece James was called up to Gareth Southgate’s England team for the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Andorra and Hungary, to be held next week.

Gareth Southgate suggested that he was under the impression that James, as well as his Chelsea teammate Mason Mount, would be fit for the playoffs, saying:

“Clearly they are yet to show up at their clubs, so there is an unknown element to that, but we understand that Mason and Reece have a good opportunity for the weekend. [vs Southampton]. We will have to track that down ”

“We don’t play until next Saturday so there is a bit of time and we will know more as the week progresses in all of those situations.”

However, Tuchel was quick to pour cold water on this idea, confirming that Reece James could not represent his country in this international breakdown.

The Chelsea boss joked:

“When I saw him, I thought maybe Reece would go with the England water polo team, as he now trains in the pool.”

“I was a bit surprised, I understand that he was selected for the [England] football team, but this will not happen. My last information is that it will not go, it can only be a misunderstanding.

Will Southgate call in a replacement before crucial games?
