Statistics highlight why Manchester United is far from competing for the Premier League

Manchester United vs Everton

Saturday’s early Premier League clash was played recently.

Said game would pit Manchester United against Everton at Old Trafford. Man United headed into the game looking to bounce back from their 1-0 loss to Aston Villa last weekend.

Everton, for their part, faced, on paper, their toughest test of the Rafa Benítez era so far.

But, when all was said and done on Saturday, Everton probably came out much happier from both sides.

The first 45 were uneventful, and Man United finally opened the scoring thanks to a curling effort from Anthony Martial:

However, despite having all of Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho in the 45th seconds, the hosts were unable to add to their goals tally for the day.

And they would eventually be punished for this when the Toffees broke and finally matched through Andros Townsend:

Man United approaching an unwanted record

Following that goal, a rather worrying statistic has come to light.

According to Opta, Man United have conceded at least once in each of their last nine league games at Old Trafford, their longest streak of games without a clean sheet at home in the top flight since February 1971:

The great teams that win the title 99.9 percent of the time have excellent defensive records both at home and away, but especially on their own turf.

However, Manchester United are, as the statistic above shows, clearly far from having a solid bottom line and, in turn, far from being able to realistically compete for the Premier League.
