Tomiyasu’s summer signing compared to Ronaldo by former club director

Tomiyasu and his immediate impact on Arsenal

When fans vote him Man of the Match in his first North London Derby for Arsenal, it’s fair to say he’s having fun. In the case of Japanese international Takehiro Tomiyasu, there hasn’t been a better summer signing for Mikel Arteta than this one, although Aaron Ramsdale may not agree.

The 22-year-old former Bologna standout has gone live in North London since completing his £ 17m move from Emilia-Romagna in a deal in which Arsenal beat Tottenham for his signing.

In three appearances so far for Arsenal, Mikel Arteta’s men have scored all three of their Premier League wins of the 2021-22 season, while securing two clean sheets in the process.

While all the credit may not go to Tomiyasu alone, given the contributions of Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White and Gabriel in a defensive box looking at the business during the Gunners’ form, the question of the birth of a right-back in the Emirates. it has certainly been answered.

Comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo highlight a brilliant summer catch

Although there was a degree of uncertainty surrounding the deal to bring Tomiyasu to the Emirates, from questions about his position to whether or not the deal was a panic buy, there are some who have never lost faith in the Japanese international; including former Sint-Truindense sports director Andre Pinto.

Pinto I recently spoke with Goal about Tomiyasu and the type of player he is and why the Belgian team was so desperate to sign the Fukuoka native;

“The amazing thing about Tomi is that he does not accept anything that is not success. He is not lucky, nothing for Tomi comes because he is lucky. He is a very hard-working player.

There are a lot of dedicated players, but Tomi has a bit of the Cristiano Ronaldo mindset in terms of determination, in terms of hard work and in terms of healthy eating. He is the type of player who is never satisfied. He will always keep working hard to keep developing.

“I worked with our CEO, Takayuki Tateishi, at FC Tokyo, so we knew Tomi from Japan. He was 19 years old at the time and what most caught our attention was his potential. It is not every day that you have a player who is 1.88m tall and has the speed, the physique and the technique.

We believed in Tomi so much that when he arrived he had an ankle injury and was on the mend. Our doctors said ‘you can’t sign this player, he’s injured’. So our CEO went to the board and said ‘you can take it, I guarantee it.’ That’s the confidence we had in Tomi at that time. “

Tomiyasu performed brilliantly in what would be his only season in Belgium with Canary Islands before moving to Bologna in the summer of 2019 on a € 7 million deal that saw Sint-Truidense make a net profit of almost 10 times on the € 800k they spent.

All signs point to Takehiro Tomiyasu being a starter transfer move for the Arteta-Edu regime that could well end with Arsenal securing their four preferred defenders for at least the next five years.
