Arsenal’s Ben White “in line” for England, called up after impressive display

More than a few eyebrows were raised when Arsenal announced that they had reached a £ 50 million deal with Brighton for the transfer of Ben White from the south coast to North London.

The England defender was part of the Euro 2020 squad that reached the final before losing to Italy, but did not play a competitive minute in the tournament, like teammate Aaron Ramsdale.

And he also got off to a rocky start to his career in red and white, where he was consistently outmatched by Brentford forward Ivan Toney before a positive Covid-19 test result saw him miss the Gunners’ clashes with Manchester City and Chelsea.

Yet in the three games since his return, White has shone. Successful shutouts against Norwich and Burnley were followed by an impressive performance against Tottenham, which kept Harry Kane quiet for much of the ninety minutes.

Online Target For England Retirement

White’s comeback saw him lose England’s first team of the season to Gareth Southgate, but according to The Guardian’s Jacob Steinburg, he won’t be as unlucky this time.

The Arsenal player is set to be called up for the World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary due to the absence of John Stones and Harry Maguire, Southgate’s regular first-choice partner.

The Stones have yet to play for Manchester City this season, while Harry Maguire was ruled out for a few weeks with a calf injury after limping out of Manchester United’s clash with Aston Villa on Saturday.

This will offer White the opportunity to toss his hat in the ring to become a cornerstone of Southgate’s side even when the pair are fully fit, while a couple of impressive performances will bring him closer to the selection for the team of the LA. World Cup in 12 months.
