Arsenal came close to making a move for the highly rated Nigerian forward last summer

Arsenal came close to signing the highly rated Nigerian forward last summer in a big money move

Arsenal was on the cusp of the Osimhen deal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta came close to getting his questions answered about the long-term center-forward solution at the Emirates last summer, and the Gunners are not far from a move for Victor Osimhen.

According to Football.LondonThe highly skilled 22-year-old Nigerian international, who at the time was practicing in northeastern France with LOSC lille, was very much on the Gunners’ radar before his eventual transfer to SSC Napoli.

This was confirmed by the journalist Paolo Bargiggia, who spoke with 1 Station Radio;

“… You have to know that Osimhen was followed by Arsenal: he was very close to the Gunners, but Cristiano Giuntoli [Napoli sporting director] spoke with Aurelio De Laurentiis [owner & chairman] and the president broke the delay: then Napoli decided and managed to buy it ”.

With Osimhen completing his move to the then Stadio San Paolo (now known as Stadio Diego Armando Maradona) for £ 60 million, it would have been the second time in consecutive seasons that Arsenal had funded. Mastiffs after spending £ 72 million for Nicolas Pépé the previous summer.

What the data tell us; Osimhen compared to current forwards

Comparing data between different players who exist and operate on different systems can never paint the whole picture, but stark comparisons between Osimhen and Arsenal’s current top forwards, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, paints an intriguing picture.

There’s no question that the Gunners fought big for much of the 2020-21 season, especially before the turn of the year. Neither Aubameyang nor Lacazatte had a stellar season, but the numbers show that Osimhen would not have been better… in theory.

Although he recorded considerably fewer minutes than the Arsenal pair, his total goal total (10) was on the same level as Auba and just three for Lacazette. However, that goal total came from more shots and as a consequence Osimhen’s conversion% was well below Arsenal’s two forwards. He also boasted a worse shot accuracy percentage and lowest attack success percentage, although he was the most effective in the air among the trio.

Yet compared to the current 2021-22 season, Osimhen compares very well to Aubameyang as he shows what Arsenal might have missed last summer. (note: Lacazette is not included as he has only logged 31 minutes of Premier League action so far)
