Michail Antonio responds after being branded a ‘cheat’ for lack of Meslier

How Michail Antonio responded to being labeled a 'cheater' by Leeds fans

West Ham United star Michail Antonio has given his opinion on the incident that saw him leave Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier down on his feet during the meeting between the two teams last weekend.

Fallen peacocks

David Moyes’s men, of course, made the trip to Elland Road on Saturday.

The Irons headed into confident proceedings fresh off a 1-0 win at Old Trafford to reserve their spot in the EFL Cup round of 16 for the week.

And, when all was said and done in West Yorkshire, West Ham’s good form at the start of the season just continued.

Despite going a goal behind from the start, the visitors finally rallied, emerging on the right side from a 2-1 scoreline.

Star hitman Michail Antonio proved himself the hero that day, taking Declan Rice’s pass striding up to the Leeds area, before confidently fitting home as the proceedings progressed through time.

‘Don’t think it’s a fault’

However, as described above, if some of the local support that attended Elland Road had had their way, then Antonio would not even have been on the field to catch the winner of West Ham’s last gasp on Saturday.

This came after an earlier incident saw the visitors deny a goal from Tomas Soucek, after teammate Antonio was spotted by the VAR team landing a forearm in Illan Meslier’s face.

And, of course, many were of the opinion that the challenge in question should have culminated in immediate dismissal.

This was made clear when, following the full-time whistle, the attacker in the form of the Hammers was attacked with shouts of “cheat, cheat, cheat” and “you should have gotten out.”

In turn, speaking in a later interview with WHUTVAntonio was inevitably drawn to the situation and the abuse directed at him by Leeds supporters.

However, the 31-year-old was in no mood to back down, revealing his opinion that, in fact, the union was not even worthy of a free kick:

“Basically I jumped up and the hand I led with has caught the goalkeeper.”

Honestly, I don’t think it’s a foul, but I caught him, he fell, and we scored. The referee has made the decision and that is the decision at the end of the day. Anyway we managed to add the three points and we will continue forward. ‘
