Why Hugo Lloris’s Tottenham / Chelsea comparison doesn’t make sense

Why Hugo Lloris's Tottenham / Chelsea comparison doesn't make sense

Tottenham and Chelsea de Lloris comparison

Ahead of Sunday’s North London Derby, Hugo Lloris has made a comparison between Tottenham and Chelsea that makes very little sense.

Before the clash with Arsenal, Tottenham have not been in their best form.

They defeated the Wolves on penalties in the League Cup in their last game. Before that, they lost 3-0 to Chelsea, drew 2-2 with Rennes and lost 3-0 to Crystal Palace, last winning a match in 90 minutes against Watford on August 29.th.

In defense of the Spurs’ poor form, Hugo Lloris has called for more time to form a team with a new coach.

This, on the surface, seems like a pretty reasonable question. However, Lloris’s argument falls apart when she begins to compare the Lilywhites to Chelsea.

The Blues are one of the best teams in England today and Lloris seems to believe that Chelsea are succeeding because they know each other well and have won many trophies together.

“We have to recognize at this point that Chelsea is a much better team than us. But we are still looking to improve and when we look at the potential of our squad, it is very good. We just have to work and move on.

“You know when you’re not at your best, so the confidence wears off and we were a little in the middle.

“And because Chelsea are so good, they know each other well, they won a lot of trophies together, confidence is high. And you know when they feel like it’s time to push the button, they push and it’s like a machine. “

Why the Lloris comparison doesn’t make sense

The reality, however, is that Tuchel only assumed command in late January and already had his team dominating teams just weeks into his reign.

And, despite what Lloris’s comments may suggest, most of Tottenham’s team have known each other for as long, if not longer, than Chelsea’s. In the loss to Crystal Palace, for example, Emerson Royal was the only summer signing in the XI, just as Romelu Lukaku is generally Chelsea’s only summer signing in their teams this season.

Lloris then states that it is too early to judge them as a group of players and as a team with a new coach:

“Obviously, people are watching every game and analyzing every game, and that’s normal. But as a player, as a group of players, as a team with the coach, it is too early to judge us.

“We need time, but in football we really don’t have time. You need to perform and get results for a club like Tottenham. “Sometimes you can have a great first half of the season and a second half… boof! “The truth is at the end of the season, where you end up on the table.”

The player group argument is largely nonsense as most of the Spurs squad have been the same for a while.

And again, if Lloris wants to compare Chelsea and Tottenham, Tuchel arrived mid-season and beat Atlético de Madrid just weeks before winning the Champions League after just over three months at the helm.

Nuno has had a preseason, more than a month of games is nowhere near the level Chelsea was at after the German’s first month in charge. Of course, it’s okay to say that a manager may need more time, but Lloris’s argument clearly falls short of Chelsea’s comparison.
