Timo Werner ‘originally wanted’ to join Manchester United

Revealed: Premier League rival Timo Werner wanted to join instead of Chelsea

Rumors in the German media this weekend suggest that Timo Werner was in fact considering a move to another of the giants of English football, before joining Chelsea.

Blues season

German hit man Werner, of course, moved to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2020, following another brilliant campaign in his home country, with RB Leipzig.

In all, however, the 25-year-old’s Premier League experience has proven to be spot on.

Werner, to his credit, is now European champion, after playing a central role in Chelsea’s march to Champions League glory in May.

And while his work pace, attitude and even surprisingly creative feats have proven to be of the highest level while he was Blue, the attacker has received well-deserved criticism for his regular wastefulness in front of goal.

Werner, in 52 appearances in all competitions in 2020/21, managed to find the net on 12 insignificant occasions.

Meanwhile, such troubles have since continued into the new campaign, and the German has scored just one solo goal in six outings so far.

Old Trafford ambitions

As such, it goes without saying that those in a position of power at Stamford Bridge were likely to have been disappointed by the return of a hefty € 53 million. rate.

But, as described above, if the last word circulating in the German press is something to go through, then Chelsea was, in fact, on the verge of missing Werner’s addition altogether.

Information is courtesy of Sports box, citing the trusty Der Spiegel, who exclusively reveals that a year before his move to the English capital, the 25-year-old had his sights firmly set on linking up with another of the Premier League giants.

The outfit in question? Manchester United:

Chelsea FC was not Werner’s first choice!

In the “SPIEGEL” report it is announced that Timo Werner originally wanted to join Manchester United, and not Chelsea. This is confirmed by 2019 documents.
