Why Naby Keita does not want to sign a new contract with Liverpool

Why Naby Keita does not want to sign a new contract with Liverpool

Naby Keita’s season at Liverpool

Keita joined Liverpool in 2018 from German team RB Leipzig, for a reported fee of £ 54 million.

The African had emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s most prominent talents during his time at Leipzig, and Liverpool fans were certainly excited to see what his latest addition could do in the Premier League.

However, since making the switch to Anfield, it’s fair to say that Keita is very disappointed.

The midfielder has been plagued with injuries and fitness issues during his time in Merseyside, and also contracted Covid-19 last season.

But even when fit, Jurgen Klopp doesn’t seem to trust the former RB Salzburg player too much.

Instead, a trio of midfielders consisting of Georginio Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho had been the German’s favorite during what has been Liverpool’s most successful period for many years.

Why Keita doesn’t want to sign a new contract with Liverpool

Yet even with Wijnaldum gone, Keita is apparently not the first choice in Liverpool.

Before his injury against Leeds, the young Harvey Elliott was becoming a prominent starter in Liverpool’s midfield, while Thiago had also been used quite frequently before suffering an injury.

So, it seems that Keita is perhaps the 5 of Liverpool.th Central midfielder chosen when everyone is fit.

As a result, it is perhaps not too surprising to see that Keita is claimed to be ready to decline a new offer of contact with Liverpool.

According Goal, citing German media Bild, the reason for this is because Keita is not a guaranteed starter and as a result is reluctant to compromise his long-term future with the Premier League giants.

Keita’s current contract expires in 2023 and if he doesn’t want to sign any new terms, Liverpool may need to change him in the summer to make sure he doesn’t leave for nothing.
