Mikel Arteta explains how Arsenal can close the gap in the 'big six'

Mikel Arteta & Arsenal

Mikel Arteta is now in the middle of his third season at Arsenal.

Of course, he took over midway through the 2019/20 season following the firing of Unai Emery, but the Spaniard only led the Gunners to an 8.th place ended that quarter.

2020/21 would be Arteta’s first full season at the helm, and with big signings like Thomas Partey and Gabriel, fans were probably expecting a bit more from his side.

However, North Londoners were once again forced to settle for 8th place the last campaign.

Since then this summer he has seen Arsenal again quite active in the market, tackling some problem areas and adding youngsters to the squad.

But even though we’re only six weeks into the season, Arsenal regaining a top-six spot this period already seems highly unlikely.

How Arsenal can close the gap in the big six

Arsenal started 2021/22 losing three in a row in the PL, and although their form has now improved, can they really compete with the top six teams?

Arsenal seem to have drafted well in the summer, but so did all the teams already ahead.

Even Leicester City and West Ham, the two teams most likely to be knocked out of the top six by Arsenal, did quite well during the summer.

So how can Arsenal claim a place in the Europa League or the Champions League?

Mikel Arteta was asked a similar question recently, when asked how his team bridges the gap with the big six when other teams already ahead of Arsenal are making improvements, to which the Spaniard replied:

“Well, first of all, understand what the context is. So where are the rivals, what have they done to achieve what they have done and what do we have to do to get there. And then just focus on your process and what you can control because the rest is out of your hands.

“But you have to be realistic in the sense that if the gap is so big, there are things that have to be there to (reduce) this gap. There is no other possibility because we do not expect anyone to lower the level. I think the opposite. I think they will try to raise the level even more ”.
