How Emi Martínez used Cristiano Ronaldo to discourage Bruno Fernandes for missing the penalty spot

How Emi Martínez used Cristiano Ronaldo to discourage Bruno Fernandes for missing the penalty spot

Spectators of this afternoon’s Manchester United-Aston Villa clash have taken to social media to highlight a moment some may have missed in preparation for Bruno Fernandes’ costly missed penalty.

Hause decides

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, of course, took Villa in just a short time ago.

After being kicked out of the EFL Cup by West Ham during the week, the Red Devils headed to proceedings seeking a make-up result, amid a fierce battle at the top of the Premier League.

Yet when all was said and done, after another relating to 90 minutes at Old Trafford, United fell in their third defeat in four in all competitions.

A solo goal made the difference when the final whistle came, marked by Kortney Hause with 88 minutes left.

After breaking free at the front post, the outstanding visitor defense did superbly nodded Douglas Luiz’s corner kick from the right, silencing the increasingly frustrated home crowd in the process.

Emi excellence

However, he was not the winner for Hause, who actually made the headlines after the match.

Instead, this came in the form of a late missed opportunity for Manchester United to level things out at Old Trafford.

With 93 minutes left, the Reds received a penalty after Bruno Fernandes was declared down in the Aston Villa area.

In turn, Cristiano Ronaldo was expected to arrive in the summer and take responsibility, having long boasted a stellar record from 12 yards, particularly in pressure situations.

However, in a shock to those watching at home and inside the Theater of Dreams, it was Fernandes who finally stepped forward.

Evidently based on the end result, the Portuguese master went on to soften his lines, directing a terrible effort far from the visitors’ crossbar and squandering any remaining hope of a United points shot in the process.

However, as described above, what many may have overlooked in the run-up to Bruno’s lousy pitch were the mind games played by Villa’s No.1 Emiliano Martinez.

As highlighted by a selection of eagle-eyed fans on social media, when it became clear that it was United’s midfield driver, and not Ronaldo, who was ready to step forward from 12 yards, Martinez headed straight for the duo of the Red Devils.

From here, the former Arsenal player repeatedly pointed to the latter, making it clear to Fernandes that his teammate, who won the Ballon d’Or five times, should have been the man to take responsibility:
