Paulo Fonseca reveals key managerial reason why he rejected Tottenham's job

Tottenham’s lousy managerial search

Tottenham struggled to find a successor to José Mourinho, something that was aired publicly to the amusement of rival fans. They approached and were rejected by various managers, and appeared to be close to hiring former Roma boss Paulo Fonseca before a move failed.

In the end, the board chose Nuno Espirito Santo, after his prolonged efforts to insure almost everyone else.

Santo have had an uneven start to the season, with back-to-back 3-0 losses after three straight 1-0 wins that saw his team top the table at the first international break. However, as statistics suggest, attacking football is not his strong suit.

Fonseca reveals that Paratici was a key reason why the measure failed

Talking with him TelegraphThe former Roma manager revealed that his signing proposal for Tottenham depended on the appointment of new football director Fabio Paratici, who in turn wanted a more defensive football than the attacking one promised by Daniel Levy.

When asked how close he was, Fonseca announced:

“The deal was done. We were planning the preseason and Tottenham wanted an offensive coach. It was not announced, but we do plan preseason players. But things changed when the new CEO arrived and we did not agree with some ideas and he preferred another coach ”.

“I have some principles. I wanted to be the coach of the great teams but I want the right project and a club where people believe in my ideas, in the way I play, and this did not happen with the CEO.

“This is what the president and the sports director (Steve Hitchen) asked for. Build a team that can play attractive and offensive football and I was ready for that. I cannot be otherwise. All my teams will have these intentions. In Rome or at Shakhtar in the Champions League against the biggest teams, I will not send my teams to defend near their own box ”.

Clearly, then, Spurs fans shouldn’t have too much hope when it comes to expecting attacking football this season, even though the opportunity was there this summer to implement just that.
