Kepa overtook Petr Cech to set new Chelsea record against Aston Villa

How Kepa beat Petr Cech to set Chelsea's new all-time record against Aston Villa

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga engraved his name indelibly in the club’s history books on Wednesday night.

Retirees make their way

Of course, Thomas Tuchel’s men were back in action 24 hours ago.

After continuing their impressive opening to the new Premier League campaign courtesy of a 3-0 beating over Tottenham, the Blues turned their attention to matters at the front of the cup.

An EFL Cup third-round showdown with Aston Villa was looming, and in turn a considerably more night of testing had developed.

After young Cameron Archer canceled a rare Timo Werner finish just past the hour mark, the proceedings were sent to a penalty shootout.

And it was the hosts who finally got on their nerves, booking a fourth-round showdown with Southampton courtesy of an effort by Reece James superbly hit from 12 yards.

Kepa’s new landmark

However, aside from Chelsea’s penalty converters, another man who proved crucial to their eventual win on the penalty shoot-out was goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Spanish international Kepa, of course, has come under regular criticism throughout his time in the English capital, and now acts as a substitute for Edouard Mendy under the supervision of Thomas Tuchel.

However, after receiving his last start on Wednesday and subsequently avoiding one of Villa’s penalties, the 26-year-old secured an impressive piece of club history.

As revealed in the aftermath of the matchup, surprisingly, Kepa has now saved more 12-yard efforts during shootouts than any other player in Chelsea history, breaking his previous tie with Blues legend Petr Cech:
