James Rodríguez leaves Everton for Al Rayyan of Qatar

Official: James Rodríguez leaves Everton for Qatar

James Rodríguez leaves

After 12 months of Jekyll and Hyde with Everton, the Toffees have confirmed that Colombian star James Rodríguez left the club to sign for Qatar’s Al Rayyan.

Signed from Real Madrid in the summer of 2020, Rodríguez was a clear statement of intent from the blue side of Merseyside. Teaming up with former management favorite Carlo Ancelotti in Merseyside, who ran him in Spain, Rodriguez started running.

The creator scored three goals and three assists in his first six games for the club, helping Everton take an early lead in the Premier League table, and it was for everyone looking like a brilliant addition to the Toffees side.

However, it all started to fall apart, with James recording just 3 more goals and 1 assist in the remainder of the 38-game season. In the end, the Colombian had completely left Ancelotti’s plans, and after the arrival of Rafa Benítez after Ancelotti rejoined Madrid, he was frozen.

With speculation rife throughout the summer about his next destination, no move in Europe was looming, leaving a move to Asia or MLS as the only two viable options for the 29-year-old.

And it was the first one Rodriguez opted for, joining Al Rayyan for an undisclosed fee.

Who are Al Rayyan?

With the 2022 World Cup scheduled to be played in Qatar, the national competition could become the center of attention in the coming seasons.

Al Rayyan are currently managed by former French international Laurent Blanc, and have won 2 points in their first 2 matches in the Qatar Stars League. Rodríguez will be linked with once Everton transfer target Yacine Brahimi, and becomes the second high-profile player to leave England for Qatar this summer, following the sale of Toby Alderweireld.

Will Rodríguez see his career in the Middle East, or is this simply a gap until a comeback next summer?
