Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso explains why he will stop kneeling in an anti-racist gesture

Chelsea's Marcos Alonso explains why he will stop kneeling in an anti-racist gesture

The Premier League gets on its knees

In their battle against racism, Premier League clubs and footballers in general have chosen to kneel. This has been met, for the most part, with acceptance and respect, but in some quarters it has been met with boos.

However, Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha stopped doing so, saying that:

“Growing up, my parents let me know that I should be proud to be black. We should stand tall.

“When kneeling, sometimes people forget that we have to. It is becoming something we just do. That’s not enough for me. “

Marcos Alonso becomes the next to stop taking the knee

Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso has since become the second Premier League player to stop kneeling before matches, instead choosing to say no to racism. However, he was quick to reiterate his stance against racism.

“I am totally against racism and I am against all kinds of discrimination”

“I just prefer to put my finger on the plate where it says No to racism, as they do in other sports and in football in other countries.

“I prefer to do it that way and, of course, say very clearly that I am against racism and respect everyone.”

Alonso continued:

“I just prefer to do it this way. It’s my way of doing it, and maybe I think it’s losing a bit of steam the other way around.

“So I prefer to do it this way and show that I fully support the fight against racism.

“For now, I’d rather aim for the sleeve and that’s what I’ll do.”
