Per Mertesacker tells Arsenal fans to stay with Mikel Arteta

Arsenal’s shaky start

Just two weeks ago Arsenal sat at the bottom of the Premier League table, without a point and without a goal. To add to their suffering, North London rivals Tottenham had broken into first place, having won the opening three meetings.

Two close victories have slowed the decline somewhat, while Sunday’s north London derby at Emirates Stadium surprisingly offers the Gunners a chance to tie on points with the Spurs, who have suffered back-to-back 3-0 losses.

No man would have been more relieved to see the Gunners start to score points than Mikel Arteta, who was apparently looking down had he not come out of ties with Norwich and Burnley with at least something. Six points out of fifteen is far from an ideal start, but it is certainly an improvement over two weeks ago.

Mertesacker asks for patience

One man who has clearly been a huge behind-the-scenes influence for the Gunners is former player Per Mertesacker, who has become the head of youth development at Arsenal’s academy. Judging from the most recent result, it is safe to say that you are doing something right.

Now talking to The Beautiful Game Podcast, Mertesacker has offered his assessment of what is happening within the club. Speaking about the transition period, the German, who played 221 games for the club, said:

“Mass transition, that’s what I would classify as. I think it was clear that when Arsène (Wenger) left the void that needed to be filled, it wouldn’t be fixed in a couple of seasons, or in 3-4 years.

You always want the shortcut, you know, hit (snap fingers) straight back to the Champions League, back to success. I think that even myself, realizing and working now with the academy, going to a more long-term development, I think we see similar traits in the first team, and I hope Mikel has the time he needs. “

He then asked the Arsenal fan base for patience, continuing:

“I want to be successful tomorrow, I want to go back to the Champions League tomorrow, I want to talk to people and say ‘listen, we have the best club in the world that fights for titles every year.’ That is not reality. I think the sooner we get on the train of “we’re still in a great transition” [the better]. “

Crucially, he revealed that he believes Mikel Arteta is still the right man for the job, despite the poor results:

“To have a sustainable success there needs to be some trust. I am totally in favor of trusting people. If Mikel Arteta, and I perceive him as the right person, let’s give him the confidence and the development team that he can take to the next level that the Champions League will achieve, maybe in 2-3 years.

Of a person from the club, that is my opinion basically at the moment, because I have worked very closely with Mikel “

“I know how much he loves him, I know his work ethic, I know how hard the squad is working at the moment to get to a better level. I think we all have to swallow disappointment right now, that I am eager to change, but the environments that we are going to provide in the years to come will be key to our success.

“There is a lot at stake, and I understand there is a lot of criticism, but some people need to swallow that and try to grow up with it, and Mikel is someone who does that.”

With significant support from within the club, and the Spaniard seemingly going nowhere, is it time for Arsenal fans to rally behind their coach?
