Gary Neville questions Jesse Lingard’s decision to stay at Manchester United

Gary Neville questions Jesse Lingard's decision to stay at Manchester United

Jesse Lingard scores the winner against West Ham

In an almost poetic way, Jesse Lingard came off the substitutes bench to score the Manchester United winner’s goal against West Ham, where he spent the final end of last season on loan.

Although Lingard refused to celebrate in front of his former fans, he couldn’t help the fact that his goal took a valuable point from the hammers.

With Bruno Fernandes leading the English in the pecking order, it was a surprise to see him remain in Manchester this summer. The additions of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s forwards stable have pushed the 28-year-old lower in the pecking order, with just 12 months left in his contract.

Gary Neville questions the decision to stay

Speaking on the Sky Sports Football podcast on Sunday, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville questioned why Lingard decided to stay, saying:

I still maintain that it should be gone, but it will have its moments.

“ I was glad to see how he recovered after what happened in Europe in the middle of the week.

“Recovering and marking the winner is a fantastic moment for him. He has a good character, he is a very good player and I think he should play 40-45 games per season.

However, he went on to point out that Lingard’s loss in terms of appearances will be United’s gain when it comes to team depth:

“He won’t get that at United in terms of 90 minute starts, but he’s one of those players that I think United will benefit from having.”

‘I just thought for Jesse himself, he should be gone. United could be a better team with someone like Lingard in it. ‘

Is Neville right or Lingard right to stay in Manchester?
