Why Antonio Rudiger almost missed Chelsea’s match with Tottenham

Why Antonio Rudiger almost missed Chelsea's match with Tottenham

A bizarre chain of events that nearly culminated with Antonio Rudiger being forced out of Chelsea’s meeting with Tottenham tonight has been highlighted online.

Blues cruise

After kicking off their European campaign with a 1-0 takedown of Zenit St. Petersburg during the week, Thomas Tuchel’s team turned their attention back to domestic affairs today.

The Blues made the journey through London to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, for a Premier League match with Spurs.

Chelsea entered the clash knowing that another three-point shot would bring them to the same level as title rivals Liverpool and Manchester United at the top of the English top flight, having racked up three wins out of four before Sunday.

And, when all was said and done, this is precisely what the Pensioners did.

A dominating performance, which saw them come to life after the interval, finally culminated with the Pensioners emerging on the right side from a 3-0 scoreline.

Thiago Silva opened the scoring in the capital, before N’Golo Kante did it two shortly after, and Antonio Rudiger added some sparkle to the scoreboard in injury time.

Rudiger’s concern

In the background of the action coming to a close in North London, in turn, a host of Chelsea stars were subsequently chosen to receive accolades in post-match analysis sessions.

The likes of Marcos Alonso and Thiago Silva shone, and the latter was rewarded with Man of the Match honors.

However, in the eyes of many, it was the fit Rudiger who proved to be the most outstanding player in the derby.

The German was barely wrong all night, keeping Tottenham’s always dangerous front line at bay, and even contributing a well-deserved late goal.

But, as described above, if it weren’t for a late turn of events, Thomas Tuchel may not have had his star stopper against Tottenham.

As revealed by Sky Sports’ Martin Tyler, and ever since streamed it, Rudiger had trouble accessing his Covid-19 pass, required for all players entering Premier League stadiums, on his phone before of the start of the match.

In turn, the entry of the German to the ground as a whole was at one point in serious doubt:

‘I should also mention that he [Rudiger] He was about to not get into the game today because on his phone, the biometrics did not work and you have to pass to pass the Covid verification. ‘

“Fortunately, they got the technology to work and he is here.”
